Peralta's four campuses came together in solidarity to celebrate the second annual Unity Day at Laney College on Thursday, March 19. The event kicked-off at 11 a.m. as house band "Rusty Nails" set the soundtrack for the day, pumping out upbeat modern hits as well as classic jam anthems.

The word 'black' is often used figuratively to describe negative occurences but a few Laney students are redefining "Blackness." "The Black Hour" is an internet radio show, organized by members of the Laney Black Student Union (BSU), airing on 9th Floor Radio through Peralta TV.

Afros, bell bottoms and Black Panther styled leather jackets, worn by beautiful young models, graced the stage of the Laney Theater Feb. 2 at the 4th Annual 'Say it Loud' Youth Fashion Show. The show bridged 70's and HipHip culture through fashion. Produced by Mark Elliott of New Breed Entertainment, and directed by Mario Benton of Mario B.

A plethora of groovy styles, cool cats, and smooth moves came together Saturday, Feb. 2, in the Laney Theater. Hosted by Kimberly Facen and sponsored by Youth UpRising, the "Say it Loud" fashion show was a chance for Mario B and his class of models to show off a kind of fusion combining styles of today in retrospect to the 70's.

Hundreds of community college students of African Descent are expected to attend the 10th Annual Black Caucus Leadership Conference being held at El Camino College in Torrance Feb. 15-16, 2008. This year's conference theme is "Sankofa: Honoring our past, celebrating the present, building our future," commemorating the organization's history and growing legacy.

Free and confidential HIV/AIDS testing, and the satisfaction of knowing, should be enough reason for Laney students to get tested without using extravagant incentives such as free food and gifts. This was the resounding message conveyed by the ASLC Council members at its regular meeting on Nov. 7.

Alameda County has been under a 'state of emergency' since 1998 due to the rapidly increasing number of people becoming infected with HIV/AIDS. Part of the difficulty in preventing the spread of the disease is the ignorance surrounding testing opportunities and the negative stigma about being screened.

Nearly 350 people came to the Laney College Forum on Oct. 16 to hear the Nation of Islam's (NOI) leader, the Hon. Minister Louis Farrakhan, speak live via webcast. The program, which was co-sponsored by the Oakland Muhammad Mosque and the Laney Black Student Union, commemorated the 12th anniversary of the historic Million Man March of 1995 when over one million African-American men descended upon Washington, D.C.

Students were welcomed by the "Welcome Back Bash" thrown by the Associated Students of Laney College (ASLC) on Aug. 30 on the Quad. ASLC did a great job in attempting to bring the students together; the students seemed amused and enjoyed the cool prizes that were raffled, prizes like iPods and bookstore gift cards.
